KUALA LUMPUR — The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has launched an investigation into a senior Penang state government official over the alleged misuse of zakat funds in a land transaction.
According to a source familiar with the matter, the investigation follows a revelation made by a state assemblyman during a Penang State Legislative Assembly sitting late last year.
The MACC has initiated preliminary inquiries to determine if any wrongdoing occurred, particularly regarding the potential misappropriation of funds designated for religious and welfare purposes.
“The investigation team has visited several offices believed to be involved in the case, seeking relevant documents, which are now under scrutiny,” the source said.
Additionally, investigators have already recorded statements from two individuals believed to be connected to the case. These efforts are part of a broader investigation into the decision-making process surrounding the land acquisition.
In an interview, Penang MACC director Datuk Karunanithy Y Subbiah confirmed that an investigation paper had been opened and that the case is being examined under Section 23 of the MACC Act 2009, which addresses abuse of power for personal gain.
“Yes, the MACC has opened an investigation paper, and the case is under investigation. We are in the process of gathering documents and recording statements from individuals who may assist in the investigation,” he said.
Karunanithy assured that the MACC would conduct a thorough and independent investigation in line with established procedures.
“At this stage, it would be premature to disclose more details, as the investigation is ongoing. Any action will be based on the evidence gathered during the investigation,” he stated.
He further urged the public to avoid speculation, emphasizing that the MACC takes allegations involving public officials and the misuse of public or religious funds very seriously.
“We remain committed to upholding integrity, transparency, and accountability, especially in cases involving positions of trust,” he added. – January 30, 2026
