KUALA SELANGOR: Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief Azam Baki has rejected claims the anti-graft agency has become a tool for the government of the day.

“If you look at our track record from 2016 until now, we have been very consistent,” Azam told reporters after an event here today.

He said that in 2016, MACC began focusing on cases involving large amounts of public funds, citing the 1MDB issue and the Sabah water scandal.

“So, there is no reason for anyone to label us as a tool, regardless of which party is in government, MACC has been consistent,” he said when responding to a question on the criticisms levelled against the agency.

On Tuesday, Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin claimed that the party had become the victim of “selective prosecution” after its former information chief, Wan Saiful Wan Jan, was charged with corruption.

Yesterday, former Bersatu Youth chief Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman told the High Court during his corruption trial that an MACC officer told him the anti-graft agency was “made use of” every time there was a change in government.

In the past, there have been calls for the MACC to be placed under Parliament to better ensure its independence.
