A Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) officer has denied concealing crucial information in the corruption trial of former Penang Chief Minister, Lim Guan Eng. The officer, Wan Mohd Firdaus Wan Yusof, testified in the Sessions Court and was questioned about his forensic reports on WhatsApp conversations.
Defence counsel Gobind Singh Deo suggested that Wan Mohd Firdaus had presented an incomplete report to the court, leaving out earlier conversations that could reveal the identity of a person referred to as "big boss". Gobind accused the officer of intentionally covering up facts and framing his client. Wan Mohd Firdaus admitted that there were discrepancies between the two forensic reports, but he claimed that the report for the Shah Alam Sessions Court was completed a year before Lim's case came up, making it difficult for him to recall specific details.
Gobind argued that important identifying information, such as the person's date of birth and address, was mentioned in the omitted conversations and could point to the true identity of "big boss". The defence counsel suggested that "big boss" referred to Datuk Seri Najib Razak, the former Prime Minister of Malaysia, and Wan Mohd Firdaus agreed that this was a possibility.
During the re-examination, the deputy public prosecutor asked Wan Mohd Firdaus if he knew the meaning of the term "chocolate". The officer admitted that he did not know. He also claimed that he did not know who "big boss" or "CM" referred to when asked directly by the prosecutor. Lim is facing four charges related to using his position as the chief minister to solicit bribes in order to help Consortium Zenith Construction secure an undersea tunnel project.
He allegedly requested 10 percent of the company's profit and received RM3.3 million for himself. Additionally, Lim is accused of causing state government-owned land to be sold to two companies connected to the project. The trial will resume on September 18 before judge Azura Alwi.
