The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is conducting a thorough investigation into the financial activities of the founding couple of FashionValet Sdn Bhd, a prominent Malaysian e-commerce platform. This inquiry, confirmed by MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki, primarily focuses on the cash flow and investment activities involving FashionValet and the couple’s use of funds received from key investors, including Khazanah Nasional Bhd (Khazanah) and Permodalan Nasional Bhd (PNB).

According to Azam, the couple was present at the MACC headquarters to provide statements, as MACC officers seek to clarify the methods used to receive and manage the significant investments from Khazanah and PNB. He noted that his team is actively gathering information on the couple’s financial dealings, including both the amount of money received and its subsequent allocation and use within the company. “Investigations are ongoing, and we are reviewing the couple’s transactions with Khazanah and PNB,” Azam explained.

So far, the MACC has collected statements from nine individuals, including the couple, as part of its effort to complete this investigation. Azam indicated that it’s likely that the couple will be summoned again for further questioning to ensure all aspects of the case are thoroughly addressed. “I do not deny that they may be called back either tomorrow or the day after, as the investigation is still ongoing,” he said, highlighting the persistent and rigorous nature of the MACC’s investigative process.

At this stage, no arrests have been made, and all individuals involved in the case, including witnesses, are reported to be cooperating fully with the MACC. However, the MACC’s findings thus far have raised significant concerns about the financial integrity of the transactions between FashionValet and its major investors, Khazanah and PNB.

The couple arrived at the MACC headquarters at around 2:30 pm, and as of 8 pm, there was no indication of their departure. This marks the fifth consecutive day of MACC's involvement in gathering statements from the couple, following the discovery of suspicious account transactions linked to the RM43.9 million investment loss sustained by both Khazanah and PNB in FashionValet. This substantial financial loss has raised further questions about the financial practices at FashionValet, particularly concerning the management and oversight of investment funds received from state-backed entities.

Azam previously stated that the investigation’s main objective is to determine the couple’s assets, sources of funds, and financial ties related to FashionValet. As part of this effort, the MACC has seized approximately 60 boxes of financial documents from FashionValet, Khazanah, and PNB. These documents, seized last Thursday, contain critical financial data and agreements between the parties involved and are being examined closely to uncover any irregularities or potential breaches of protocol.

The MACC’s review of these documents could prove instrumental in understanding the nature and validity of the agreements between FashionValet, Khazanah, and PNB. This process aims to ascertain if there were any inconsistencies in how the investments were handled and if the transactions were conducted in alignment with legal and regulatory standards. As the investigation unfolds, it underscores the MACC's commitment to holding corporate entities and individuals accountable for potential financial misconduct, particularly when it involves public funds. The findings of this case will likely have broader implications for corporate governance and investment oversight in Malaysia.
