KUALA LUMPUR — The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has secured a four-day remand order against three individuals, including an NGO chairman and treasurer, for allegedly submitting documents containing false information related to a basic food aid programme valued at approximately RM5 million.
The remand order until February 28 was issued by Magistrate Ezrene Zakariah following an application by the MACC at the Magistrate’s Court here this morning.
According to a source, the suspects — two men and a woman in their 30s were arrested between 3pm and 5pm yesterday when they presented themselves to give statements at the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya.
“Preliminary investigations found that all the suspects, where the NGO treasurer is also a director of the company involved, are believed to have conspired to commit the offence between 2021 and 2023,” the source said.
“All the suspects are believed to have submitted documents containing false information related to the basic food aid programme with the intention of misleading the NGO for which the chairman and treasurer serve, resulting in the organisation making payments amounting to about RM5 million,” the source added.
When contacted, the Director of the Anti-Money Laundering (AML) Division, Norhaizam Muhammad, confirmed the arrests.
He said the case is being investigated under Section 18 of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009, which pertains to the offence of providing false claims or documents to obtain payment or approval.
