The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has reiterated that its primary responsibility is to recover money linked to corruption and return it to the state through lawful procedures, stressing that decisions on how such funds are ultimately used fall under the government’s authority.

Speaking on February 3, 2026, MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki explained that the commission’s mandate focuses on tracing, seizing and forfeiting proceeds of crime before handing them over to the government, specifically through the Ministry of Finance (MOF). He emphasised that the broader objective behind these efforts is to ensure that money taken from the public through corrupt practices is restored for the benefit of the people.

Azam clarified that once the recovered assets are transferred to the government, the MACC has no role in determining how the funds are allocated or spent. He noted that decisions regarding the management, distribution and utilisation of confiscated monies are governed by existing government mechanisms and fall squarely within the MOF’s jurisdiction. According to him, this separation of responsibilities is essential to maintain institutional clarity and accountability.

He further stressed that the commission should not be burdened with expectations beyond its legal scope, as its task ends once assets are successfully recovered and forfeited in accordance with the law. Any subsequent use of those funds, he said, is guided by government policies and financial regulations.

Azam’s remarks came amid renewed public attention on the scale of assets recovered by the MACC in recent years. Media reports previously highlighted that between January 1 and December 31, 2025, the commission recorded significant success in recovering proceeds linked to corruption, with the total amount exceeding RM8.5 billion.

The figures underscore the scale of financial recovery efforts undertaken by the commission and reflect an intensified focus on asset recovery as a key component of anti-corruption enforcement.
