The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has categorically refuted the claims made by former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, asserting that it thoroughly investigated the allegations raised in the statutory declaration (SD) by former Bank Negara assistant governor Datuk Abdul Murad Khalid against Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Records indicate that MACC, known as the Anti-Corruption Agency (ACA) at that time, took decisive action by initiating six investigation papers in response to Abdul Murad's SD, which was issued on October 26, 1999. In its recent statement, MACC emphasized the extent of the inquiry, noting that it conducted an in-depth, comprehensive, and detailed investigation with collaboration from Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM). The investigation spanned both domestic and international fronts, involving cooperation with authorities in the United Kingdom and Singapore. The objective was to ascertain the veracity of the claims against Anwar.
The results of this meticulous investigation, as outlined by MACC, unequivocally indicated that there was no case against Anwar. The findings were obtained through a cooperative effort that extended across borders and financial institutions. The investigation's comprehensive nature underscores the commitment of MACC to thoroughly examine the allegations, leaving no stone unturned.
Six investigation papers, reflecting the depth of the inquiry, were submitted to the Attorney-General's Office on August 12, 2002. Following a careful review of the evidence presented, the Attorney-General's Office made the decision not to prosecute any party involved in the matter. This crucial decision validated the findings of MACC, further affirming that the allegations against Anwar lacked the necessary merit for legal action.
In light of Dr Mahathir's recent statements, MACC reiterated that the claim suggesting ACA or MACC neglected to investigate Anwar in connection with Abdul Murad's statutory declaration is entirely false. The commission also underscored that these events transpired during Dr Mahathir's leadership as Prime Minister, seeking to provide clarity and correct any misconceptions surrounding the investigation's thoroughness and subsequent legal decisions.
