As the trial concerning the misappropriation of 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) funds unfolds, a pivotal testimony emerged from MACC Senior Superintendent Nur Aida Arifin, emphasizing that Datuk Seri Najib Razak was provided ample opportunity to furnish detailed explanations during his interrogation by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) back in 2018.
Nur Aida's testimony, presented as the 49th prosecution witness in Najib's trial at the High Court, shed light on the procedural fairness extended to all individuals summoned by the MACC for questioning, underscoring that Najib was not singled out but accorded the same privilege as any other subject of investigation or witness.
During cross-examination by Najib's lawyer, Wan Azwan Aiman, Nur Aida clarified the interrogation process employed by the MACC, wherein statements are recorded narratively, allowing the individual being questioned the opportunity to provide comprehensive explanations in response to posed inquiries.
Addressing assertions made by Najib's legal representative, Nur Aida refuted claims that the interrogators had solely requested Najib to identify specific documents related to his pre-signing of approvals on behalf of 1MDB's shareholder, Minister of Finance (MoF) Incorporated, for the acquisition of a power plant firm in August 2012.
Contrary to the defence's assertions, Nur Aida affirmed that the MACC adhered to a standard protocol during interrogations, offering individuals under investigation the opportunity to contextualize and elaborate on their involvement in the matters under scrutiny.
The trial, which has garnered significant public attention, marks a critical juncture in Najib's legal saga, particularly in light of his ongoing incarceration since August 23, 2022. Notably, Najib is currently serving a 12-year jail sentence for the misappropriation of RM42 million belonging to SRC International. However, a recent development saw a reduction in his sentence to six years of imprisonment and a RM50 million fine, reflecting a notable adjustment by the Pardons Board.
