The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is once again facing intense public scrutiny after fresh revelations surrounding the controversial RM1.1 billion investment deal involving UK-based semiconductor giant Arm Holdings and the Ministry of Economy.

This time, the criticism comes not from opposition leaders, but from within the government bloc itself.

Syahredzan Johan has openly accused former MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki of “jumping the gun” after new MACC chief Dato Sri Abd Halim Aman confirmed that investigations into the high-profile case are still ongoing and far from complete.

Syahredzan raised the question in a strongly-worded statement posted on Facebook, asking why recommendations for prosecution had already been made when investigations were still underway and crucial information from overseas had yet to be obtained.

The controversy stems from Azam’s earlier recommendation to press charges against two individuals connected to the deal, even though investigators were still in the process of collecting evidence and recording witness statements at the time.

According to Syahredzan, Abd Halim’s latest statement effectively exposes serious procedural concerns within the anti-graft agency.

The Bangi MP pointed out that MACC is still seeking mutual legal assistance from authorities in Taiwan and the United Kingdom to obtain statements from several key individuals connected to the case. Such a move, he argued, clearly demonstrates that investigations are incomplete and that critical evidence has yet to be secured.

The DAP vice-chairman said the episode reflects the deeper institutional turmoil currently affecting MACC and warned that premature public announcements risk damaging the commission’s already fragile credibility.

The RM1.1 billion investment deal has become politically explosive due to allegations that the strategic cooperation agreement involving the Ministry of Economy and Arm Limited may have been rushed and potentially biased, exposing the government to financial risks.

The investigation was initiated after complaints were lodged by several non-governmental organisations, prompting MACC to open an investigation paper under Section 23 of the MACC Act 2009 as well as Sections 420 and 409 of the Penal Code.

Among those questioned by investigators were former economy minister Rafizi Ramli and his former aide, James Chai, also known as Chai Jin Shern.

Abd Halim revealed that MACC has so far recorded statements from 26 individuals and is currently analysing documents voluntarily submitted by Rafizi himself.

The new MACC chief also acknowledged that the probe may take considerable time because it involves cross-border legal processes and multiple jurisdictions.

Abd Halim’s remarks signal a notable shift in tone from the previous MACC leadership - one that appears more cautious, transparent, and legally measured.

For Syahredzan, this transparency is a positive first step towards rebuilding public trust.

He stressed that MACC’s reputation as the nation’s premier anti-corruption agency must remain beyond reproach, especially at a time when public confidence in institutions remains deeply fragile despite Malaysia’s recent improvement in international corruption perception rankings.

The incident has now reignited broader debates about whether anti-corruption investigations in Malaysia are sometimes influenced by political pressure, media optics, or premature narratives before evidence gathering is fully completed.

As the investigation continues to stretch across Malaysia, Taiwan, and the UK, the bigger question may no longer be solely about the RM1.1 billion deal itself - but whether MACC can restore credibility and convince Malaysians that justice is being pursued professionally, independently, and without haste.
