The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has taken a significant step by compelling Mirzan Mahathir, the son of former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, to disclose his assets. Mirzan cooperated with the MACC's directive during his visit to the headquarters in Putrajaya, where he received a notice under Section 36(1)(b) of the MACC Act 2009. This section imposes an obligation to declare all assets comprehensively within 30 days, irrespective of their current possession.
This move by the MACC marks a continuation of its thorough investigation into information uncovered in the Panama Papers and Mirzan's involvement in business transactions related to the sale and purchase of government-linked companies. Initiated in August 2022, the investigation encompasses all entities and associated assets mentioned in the Pandora Papers and Panama Papers leaks. As the inquiry progresses, a total of 10 witnesses have already provided their statements, while the MACC diligently reviews financial documents and ownership records of entities identified in these reports.
The MACC's proactive approach extends to questioning individuals associated with the financial affairs of influential figures. In a recent development, Toh Puan Naimah Khalid, the wife of former finance minister Tun Daim Zainuddin, along with their two sons, faced inquiries regarding family assets. In response to the investigation, Daim and his family have filed a court application seeking a judicial review, arguing that the investigation is unconstitutional.
The Panama Papers, involving 11.5 million leaked documents in 2016, divulged financial and attorney-client information for over 214,488 offshore entities. In 2021, the Pandora Papers leak, comprising nearly 12 million documents, exposed numerous global elites for alleged tax evasion and corruption. As the MACC's investigation progresses, it underscores a commitment to unraveling complex financial dealings and ensuring transparency in the aftermath of these high-profile leaks. The agency's persistent efforts reflect a dedication to upholding anti-corruption measures and holding individuals accountable for their financial activities, contributing to the broader goal of fostering integrity in governance.
