The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is set to delve into a major investigation involving a former Prime Minister regarding a substantial government fleet procurement and maintenance contract. According to MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki, a 'long list' of individuals, including the ex-prime minister, will be summoned for questioning to shed light on the circumstances surrounding the awarding of the contract and the abrupt cancellation of a Letter of Intent (LOI) to another company with a lower bid.

Azam has highlighted the possibility of involving the former prime minister, emphasizing the need to determine his awareness of the matter during his administration. The MACC is diligently reviewing documents seized during a recent raid, and those implicated in the case will be called in for questioning promptly.

The company under scrutiny has ties to a 'Tan Sri' who reportedly donated RM2 million during the Covid-19 pandemic to the former Prime Minister's administration. In a recent move, MACC raided the Tan Sri's residence and company offices, scrutinizing over 100 company and personal accounts. This particular Tan Sri is believed to be closely associated with a former finance minister currently under MACC investigation for accumulating substantial wealth.

In addition to the former prime minister, the MACC plans to summon several government officials for questioning. Notably, the company has held the government fleet management concession since October 30, 1993. The procurement saga began in February 2018 when the government sought proposals for a 15-year contract to supply, maintain, and manage its official vehicle fleet.

A local company secured the tender, earning the LOI with a bid that was RM700 million cheaper. However, the contract faced an unexpected cancellation merely three months after a new Prime Minister took office. In a surprising twist, the same company was later re-awarded the contract, eliciting widespread outrage among Malaysians who questioned the transparency and fairness of the decision. The unfolding investigation promises to bring further clarity to the intricacies surrounding this controversial government contract and the involved key figures.
