Apple has officially opened up the public beta program for its latest operating systems, which means you no longer need a developer account to try out MacOS 27 Golden Gate, iOS 27, iPadOS 27, watchOS 27 and tvOS 27 ahead of their official release later this year. The public beta is based on the latest developer beta, and is available free of charge through Apple’s Beta Software Program.
As always, we should remind you that the beta software is still unfinished. While public betas are generally more stable than developer betas, you may still encounter bugs, app compatibility issues and shorter battery life. If you’re planning to install it, it’s a good idea to back up your iPhone, iPad or Mac first.

The biggest headline feature in iOS 27 is Siri AI, Apple’s long-awaited overhaul of Siri. The new assistant is able to understand what’s currently on your screen, search through your personal information such as emails, messages and calendars, as well as perform actions across multiple apps without requiring you to switch between them. One thing to note though is that it is only available on supported Apple Intelligence devices, including the iPhone 15 Pro and newer.
Besides Siri AI, iOS 27 also focuses on making everyday tasks faster. Apple says app launches, AirDrop transfers and Photos searches have all been sped up, while the Liquid Glass interface introduced previously has received further refinements. Other additions include a redesigned Screen Time experience, improved child safety tools, encrypted RCS messaging, inline replies in Messages and more Apple Intelligence features across the system.

On the Mac side, MacOS 27 Golden Gate isn’t a major visual overhaul, but instead builds on last year’s redesign. Apple has toned down the Liquid Glass transparency effects, making the interface less distracting while improving readability. The update also brings performance improvements, smarter CPU scheduling and better support for external displays.
MacOS 27 also gains Siri AI, bringing the same contextual intelligence found on the iPhone to the Mac. In addition, the Photos app receives new AI-powered editing tools including enhanced Clean Up, Reframe and Extend features, while users can also customise Siri’s speaking pace and expressiveness. Smaller quality-of-life improvements include a redesigned Menu Bar overflow system and other workflow enhancements throughout the operating system.
Getting the beta is straightforward enough. On your iPhone:
- Open Settings > General > Software Update.
- Tap Beta Updates.
- Select iOS 27 Public Beta.
- Return to the Software Update screen and download the update.

If you don’t see the option immediately, try restarting your iPhone before checking again.
For Mac users:
- Open System Settings.
- Go to General > Software Update.
- Click the information button beside Beta Updates.
- Choose MacOS 27 Public Beta.
- Install the update once it appears.

Apple also recommends creating a full Time Machine backup before installing beta software, especially if you’re planning to install it on your primary Mac.
All that being said, if your iPhone or Mac is your main work device, you’re probably better off waiting for the final stable release, which is expected later this year. Even though this year’s public beta appears to be one of Apple’s more polished releases so far, bugs, battery drain and app compatibility issues are still to be expected.
However, if you have a secondary device or simply can’t wait to try Siri AI and the latest Apple Intelligence features, the public beta is the easiest way to get early access without signing up as a developer.
