MIRI: The Federal Government is expanding its Madani Adopted Village programme in Sarawak to assist more rural and urban communities facing infrastructure challenges.

The nationwide initiative, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Prime Minister’s Department, has now been extended to Miri, according to Deputy Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Chiew Choon Man.

Chiew, who is also the Member of Parliament for Miri, said today that RM1 million under the Madani Adopted Village programme had been allocated to Kampung Haji Wahed in Miri, with more villages in the city expected to be included in future phases.

“The Implementation Coordination Unit in the Prime Minister’s Department in Putrajaya is managing this Madani Adopted Village initiative.

“RM1 million has already been allocated for Kampung Haji Wahed to repair village roads that were recently affected by floods and erosion.

“Public amenities such as the community hall and drainage retaining walls will also be repaired.

“The Federal Government is concerned about the welfare of ordinary rakyat in Sarawak.

“Attention will be given under the Madani Adopted Village programme to villages facing infrastructure issues, not only in rural Sarawak but also in urban locations such as Miri,” he said while officiating at a Madani programme ceremony in Kampung Haji Wahed.

Chiew, who is also the Sarawak Youth chief of Parti Keadilan Rakyat, said the Prime Minister’s Department was working closely with state ministries and local councils to appoint local contractors to carry out the upgrading works.

He added that the department was also seeking assistance from state agencies to identify additional villages that could be included under the Madani Adopted Village initiative.

Meanwhile, Piasau assemblyman Datuk Sebastian Ting welcomed the expansion of the programme to Miri.

Kampung Haji Wahed falls under the Piasau constituency.

“The RM1 million allocation will greatly help improve public facilities in the village.

“We appreciate this positive initiative from the Federal Government,” he said at the event.

Ting is secretary-general of Sarawak United Peoples Party (SUPP), a component party of the ruling Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) coalition.

Other GPS component parties include Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu, Parti Rakyat Sarawak and Progressive Democratic Party.
