The Star reported Malaysian Employers Federation (MEF) President, Datuk Dr. Syed Hussain Syed Husman was of the view that Madani Economy Framework announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as a good start by identifying the seven initiatives to rebuild and position Malaysia's economy prominently in the world within the next 10 year. He said that “The identified initiatives will be able to create a better environment doing business that will attract more investors both FDI and local investors to invest in Malaysia.”

Datuk Syed added, “It is challenging to achieve all the 7 targets within 10 years as it involves many complicated processes and actions that need to be in place and implemented. However, some of the set targets are doable and within our capacity to achieve the set targets. Transforming Malaysia into the top 30 largest economies in the world is doable.”

For Madani Economy, my favourite businesses are not just that provide value to the marketplace without doing harm but those whose profits are linked to solving human, social, community and environmental problems. Businesses are not governments. They can either lock us up or take our property. But they're tremendous organisations that accomplish tremendous things. Human progress owes an immeasurable debt to the ingenuity of entrepreneurs, inventors & innovators who have used the vehicle of business to benefit us all.

It can't all be done by the government. In the end, the many thousands of businesses that exist in Malaysia - most of them small- are run by people. In Madani Economy, we need those people to make human choices about how they and their businesses behave. Just because new techniques, increased public consciousness, or smart technology make running a good business more and more feasible, and at a profit too - does not mean it's inevitable. Businesses must choose to be good. What are the effects of businesses on the environment?

In my conversations with some business associates in support of the Madani Economy, many need to know more. Meantime, they're moving toward a norm of openness, transparency, and accountability through a combination of technology, regulation, and public pressure - which is such a big part of the answer, a way to make all businesses more human businesses.
