Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim framed the sudden resignation of his senior political secretary, Datuk Seri Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin, as a landmark demonstration of the Madani Government’s commitment to integrity and accountability. Speaking at a town hall session in Inanam, he suggested that Shamsul’s decision to relinquish his post—amid allegations linked to corruption—reflected a new standard of responsibility within the current administration.

Anwar highlighted that Shamsul had stepped down voluntarily and even urged the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to carry out a full investigation into the matter. He described such a step as virtually unheard of in previous administrations, pointing out that similar controversies in the past often saw implicated individuals evade scrutiny or flee abroad. According to him, the willingness to face investigation rather than evade it signals an important shift in how accountability is handled at the highest levels.

During the session, Anwar spoke candidly about the expectations he sets for his own staff. He said he consistently reminds officers under him that anyone found involved in wrongdoing must accept the consequences. He stressed that facing investigations, being subject to due process, and ultimately allowing the courts to determine responsibility are essential parts of safeguarding Malaysia’s governance. In his view, accountability must be practiced, not merely promised, for the country to progress.

Anwar also remarked that the country’s ambition of becoming a successful and respected nation begins with strong foundations, particularly in governance and institutional integrity. He stated that without such grounding, no policy, development plan, or reform could move the nation forward in a meaningful way.

Shamsul previously announced his resignation on Tuesday after a wave of attempts to implicate him in matters that could cast a negative light on the Madani administration. Though allegations remain under investigation, his immediate departure was presented by the prime minister as a proactive measure that prevents any cloud over the government’s reform agenda.

The prime minister’s comments in Kota Kinabalu appeared aimed both at reinforcing public confidence and at sending a message within the government machinery: integrity is now expected, not optional, and those entrusted with public office must be prepared to face scrutiny when controversies arise.
