This strategic use of foreign branding is not accidental, but a calculated business decision rooted in what experts call cultural “soft power”—the ability to shape consumer perception through heritage, sophistication, and perceived prestige.

Many brands around the world borrow the cultural soft power of other countries to influence how consumers perceive them.

Malaysian brands may adopt American-sounding names, while global fashion, beauty, and lifestyle brands sometimes use European or French-inspired cues to signal heritage, luxury, or sophistication.

Consumers often associate certain countries with specific qualities: Italy with fashion and craftsmanship, Japan with precision and innovation, France with elegance and luxury, and the USA with modernity and scale.

Bonia, a leather goods and fashion brand, has successfully positioned itself as a European luxury brand despite being founded in Singapore and later expanding into Malaysia. Many consumers assume Bonia is based in Milan or Rome, yet it has become a household name among middle- and upper-class Malaysians seeking affordable luxury.

Ogawa, a massage chair and wellness equipment manufacturer, presents itself with distinctly Japanese branding and aesthetics, leveraging Japan’s reputation for technological innovation and quality craftsmanship.

The Manhattan Fish Market adopts an American identity despite being Malaysian-based, while US Pizza and San Francisco Coffee use American city names to evoke modernity and a sense of scale.

Smart Reader, an educational technology company, is often misattributed as Singaporean when it is actually based in Malaysia, highlighting how easily branding can obscure true origins.

Origin Stories Don’t Matter—Branding Does

The irony cuts both ways: while Malaysian brands masquerade as foreign, some brands we assumed were Malaysian are actually from elsewhere.

These cases reveal how deeply branding shapes our perception of origin, often more than the actual facts.

This branding strategy works because it allows Malaysian brands to command premium prices, differentiate in crowded markets, and tap into consumers’ aspirations for international lifestyles.

However, growing social media awareness reveals consumer scepticism, with comments suggesting the illusion may lose power as consumers become more informed.

Yet the success of these brands proves that even when consumers know the true origin, international branding still carries significant weight in shaping purchasing decisions and brand loyalty.
