Madius seeks solution to Tamparuli bridge traffic woes

Kuala Lumpur: Tuaran Member of Parliament Datuk Seri Wilfred Madius Tangau has renewed calls for the Ministry of Works to introduce measures to ease traffic congestion caused by the closure of the Tamparuli Low Level Crossing bridge.

In a recent parliamentary question, Madius, who is also the Tamparuli assemblyman, asked the ministry to outline the steps being taken to reduce congestion along affected roads following the bridge’s closure.

“The closure has had a significant impact and caused congestion along Jalan Telibong to Pekan Tamparuli and the main Jalan Tamparuli-Ranau route,” he said.

In a written parliamentary reply, the Ministry said inspections by the Sabah Public Works Department found that the bridge falls under its jurisdiction and is maintained by a concessionaire appointed by the State Government.

The Ministry said the closure was necessary after the structure sustained damage requiring repair works, adding that the repairs are progressing and are scheduled for completion by the end of September 2026. Based on the current schedule, the bridge is expected to reopen to motorists in early October 2026.

During the closure, road users are advised to use alternative routes via Jalan Bontoi-Tamparuli and Jalan Kota Kinabalu-Kudat to help ease congestion.

The Ministry also said the Low Level Crossing bridge will eventually be upgraded into a permanent structure as a long-term solution.

The proposed upgrading has secured federal funding approval under the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development through Rolling Plan 5 of the 12th Malaysia Plan.

In addition, the Ministry has submitted an application for the Tamparuli Bridge (Sungai Tuaran) Replacement Project at KM35.78 of Jalan Kota Kinabalu-Kudat, Tuaran, for consideration under Rolling Plan 2 of the 13th Malaysia Plan.

The Ministry said the outcome of the application will only be determined after the tabling of the 2027 Budget.
