FORMER Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro claimed he was “in good health” while being held in a US prison awaiting trial, his son said in a video released by the ruling PSUV party on Saturday.

His son, Nicolas Maduro Guerra, a member of parliament, quoted his father as saying: “We are in good health. We are fighters.”

The video showed Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, who is also being held in the US while awaiting trial.

Maduro and his wife were brought to New York on January 3 after a US military operation in Caracas and face serious charges, including drug trafficking and weapons conspiracy in the Manhattan federal court.

According to foreign reports, they both pleaded not guilty to the charges in court.

Maduro’s detention has sparked a strong reaction, with the Venezuelan government condemning it as illegal and demanding his immediate release.

Protests in support of the couple have been held in several Venezuelan cities.

The case is a landmark in US-Venezuelan relations, with potential significant implications for the politics and economies of both countries. – January 11, 2026
