A magnitude-5.1 earthquake struck the south-west of the Greek Peloponnese peninsula on Sunday evening, with no damage reported so far, according to the Geodynamic Institute of the University of Athens.

The tremor occurred at 9:17 pm (1817 GMT).

The epicentre was located around 9 kilometres below the seabed, approximately 16 kilometres off the coast of the small town of Methoni.

"So far we have registered no damage. However, the earthquake was clearly felt," the regional mayor, Panagiotis Karvelas, told Greek public radio.

Greek media reported that the tremor was also felt in western Crete.

Whether this was already the main quake could not be determined at this stage, seismologist Vasilis Karastathis said on Greek television. Several days would need to pass before that could be established.

The region had experienced significantly stronger earthquakes in the past, he said. An all-clear could therefore not be given.
