Live-action Spider-Man actors

Superheroes are often portrayed as God-like figures with incredible strength and flying capes. So when Stan Lee initially proposed the idea of a teenager donning a mask and saving the day with his spider-like webbing, all the while trying to balance his life and making mistakes along the way, it was vehemently opposed and almost immediately rejected. Today, Spider-Man lives in the hearts of millions around the world.

What started as a revolutionary comic-book character has now cemented its place as a pop-culture icon. Over the years, we have witnessed several iterations of our beloved webhead. Multiple actors have spun their webs in movies, many of them in live-action versions.

With the latest rendition of the wall-crawler, Spider-Noir, available on Amazon Prime as a series, we now have four different actors who have played a variant of Spider-Man in the live-action format. So, we embark on a daunting task of ranking the live-action Spider-Man actors.

Needless to say, opinions vary.

Ranking all the live-action Spider-Man actors: Who do we love the most?

1. Andrew Garfield

Appeared in: The Amazing Spider-Man (2012), The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014), Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)

Andrew Garfield swung onto the silver screen as the friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man in 2012, and he was everything we had hoped for — his version of Peter Parker was smart, had a great sense of humour, and had the perfect build for the wall-crawling superhero. Most importantly, he was relatable — from building the classic web-shooters out of an old watch dial to putting together his suit with spandex and sunglasses, it felt like any of us could be Spider-Man.

As a bonus, Garfield shared a wonderful chemistry with Emma Stone (who played Gwen Stacy). Their on-screen moments were swoonworthy, and when she died in his arms, we couldn’t control our floodgates, either. Garfield’s portrayal is, by far, the best among all the live-action Spider-Man actors to date, and we are afraid that he has set the bar rather high for anyone else to dethrone him.

2. Tobey Maguire

Did you know that Tobey Maguire is the highest-paid Spider-Man actor of all time? (Picture Credit: IMDb/Spider-Man 3)

Appeared in: Spider-Man (2002), Spider-Man 2 (2004), Spider-Man 3 (2007), Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)

Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy is the first-ever appearance of the webhead on the silver screen, so for many of us (including Andrew Garfield), Tobey Maguire will be hard to replace as Peter Parker in our minds.

But it’s not just nostalgia that makes his version of Spider-Man memorable. Maguire brought a boyish charm to the character of Peter Parker, something the rest of the actors have failed to replicate. You felt happy seeing him laugh, you shed a tear or two watching him cry, and his triumphs and struggles felt personal. In short, Maguire’s rendition of the iconic character is the most human it has ever been.

3. Tom Holland

Tom Holland

Appeared in: Captain America: Civil War (2016), Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), Avengers: Endgame (2019), Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019), Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)

When the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) decided to introduce a 15-year-old variant of Peter Parker, there were serious doubts about the baby-faced Tom Holland’s potential to fill the shoes of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield. But he soon proved the naysayers wrong by using that innocence to his advantage. The result? A Spider-Man that is adorable and flawed, just the way you would hope a teenager to be.

However, don’t let the age fool you — Holland’s Spider-Man might just be the most powerful of all the live-action actors. He fought Captain America and stole his shield, held a massive ferry from breaking in two parts and sinking, (almost) took the all-powerful Infinity Gauntlet off Thanos’s hand (yes, Star-Lord, we still blame you for that), fended off hundreds of drones to put an end to Mysterio’s schemes, and got the better of Doctor Strange in the mirror dimension.

Now left broke and alone after the events of No Way Home, Holland’s Peter Parker has become relatable to many young adults. His story will continue in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, scheduled to release on 31 July 2026.

4. Nicolas Cage

Nicolas Cage
Unlike the other actors, Nicolas Cage plays Ben Reilly, a private investigator who moonlights as a crime-fighting vigilante. (Picture Credit: IMDb/Spider-Noir)

Appeared in: Spider-Noir (2026)

Multiverse has become a well-known concept in the superhero genre, more so in the context of Spider-Man. The Spider-Verse animated film series has shown us numerous variants of the web-slinger. Following its success, Sony decided to bring the character of Spider-Man Noir to life.

Nicolas Cage’s acting prowess hardly needs an introduction. Fans loved him as Ghost Rider, and he did a splendid job as the voice actor for Spider-Man Noir in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. So it is understandable why Sony went ahead with casting him as the titular character in the live-action show.

Upon its release, Spider-Noir has received rave reviews for the gripping plotline that seamlessly blends investigative thrill and action, and for Cage’s portrayal of the webhead. Here, he is not Peter Parker, the bubbly teenager, but Ben Reilly, a World War I veteran who wears the hat of a tired and sardonic private investigator living in a 1930s-inspired New York. Reily moonlights as a feared vigilante named ‘The Spider’ who comes out of retirement following the emergence of enhanced meta-humans in ‘The Big Apple’.

Cage is visibly old, and his age has been a primary concern that fans and critics have had ever since he was cast in this role. But the showrunners have managed to keep the narrative in perfect sync with his white hair strands, and his action sequences reflected the fighting style of a hero old in limbs. We loved what we saw, we also welcomed the return of organic webbing (which was shelved after the Sam Raimi trilogy), and we cannot wait for ‘The Spider’ to return.
