This article is in response to a NST news report published on January 13 , 2024 titled “Tun M believes Malaysian Indians, Chinese "not completely" loyal to country”.

Tun Mahathir's assertion questioning the loyalty of the Indian and Chinese communities in Malaysia is not only baseless but also deeply concerning for its potential to sow seeds of division. This statement starkly contradicts his previous stance where he emphasized the crucial role of these communities in the fabric of Malaysian society, revealing a glaring hypocrisy that cannot be ignored.

Malaysia has thrived on its diversity, with the coexistence of various ethnic groups contributing to the nation's rich cultural tapestry. Tun Mahathir himself has acknowledged this diversity in the past, emphasizing the importance of unity among Malaysians, regardless of their ethnic backgrounds. His recent departure from this inclusive narrative is not only perplexing but also detrimental to the social harmony that Malaysia has worked hard to maintain.

The suggestion that the Indian and Chinese communities are not completely loyal to Malaysia is not only divisive but lacks any substantive evidence. Such sweeping generalizations not only unfairly target these communities but also undermine the principles of equality and inclusivity that Malaysia has sought to uphold.

Chinese and Indian Malaysians have played pivotal roles in various fields, bringing fame to Malaysia and contributing significantly to its development. In the realm of sports, athletes like Lee Chong Wei, a Malaysian Chinese badminton legend.

On the academic front, notable figures like Sir Professor KS Nagaratnam, an accomplished Malaysian Indian neurosurgeon, have not only gained international recognition for their work but have also contributed to the advancement of medical science. Additionally, Malaysia has seen remarkable achievements in the arts and entertainment industry with individuals like Michelle Yeoh, a Malaysian Chinese actress, who has achieved global recognition for her contributions to the film industry.

These examples underscore the fallacy of questioning the loyalty of the Indian and Chinese communities in Malaysia.

It is worth noting that Dr. Mahathir, despite being given a second chance as the Prime Minister, faced challenges in effectively uniting and prospering the country. His tenure witnessed internal political struggles and policy uncertainties, leading to economic uncertainties. Given this history, it would be more constructive for Dr. Mahathir to assume the role of a statesman, leveraging his experience to guide the present government. Rather than making divisive statements, he should contribute to the nation's well-being by offering constructive advice and fostering unity for the greater good of Malaysia. The focus should be on collaborative efforts to address the challenges at hand rather than perpetuating divisions that hinder the nation's progress.

One cannot help but view Tun Mahathir's recent statement as a desperate attempt to remain relevant in today's political landscape. As a seasoned politician, he is well aware of the power of divisive rhetoric in garnering attention and stirring controversy. By resorting to such inflammatory remarks, he appears to be seeking a resurgence in the public discourse, perhaps driven by a desire to reclaim a political spotlight that has dimmed in recent times.

The irony lies in the fact that Tun Mahathir, who once championed the unity of Malaysians regardless of their ethnic backgrounds, now seems to be playing a dangerous game of exploiting ethnic sentiments for political gain. This shift in narrative raises questions about the sincerity of his previous statements and his commitment to the inclusive vision he once professed.

In conclusion, Tun Mahathir's recent statement not only lacks credibility and evidence but also stands in stark contrast to his previous affirmations of the importance of unity in Malaysia. It appears to be a calculated move to stir controversy and regain political relevance, showcasing a regrettable departure from the principles he once advocated. Malaysia's strength lies in its diversity, and any attempt to undermine this unity for personal or political gain is a disservice to the nation and its people.
