In a recent Facebook post, former Prime Minister Dr. Mahathir bin Mohamad expressed his concerns about the true intentions behind the 3R initiative and (MOU). He argues that their primary purpose is to silence the voices of the people and their representatives, preventing any criticism of the government.
Mahathir asserts that the current administration, led by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, was not elected by the public. He claims that the alliance between UMNO and Pakatan Harapan (PH) is rooted in self-interest. Prior to the elections, UMNO made it clear that it would not accept Anwar or the DAP. In turn, parties like PKR, DAP, and Amanah also refused to collaborate with UMNO. However, the political landscape shifted dramatically when the prospect of imprisonment loomed for UMNO leaders and PH leaders faced challenges in becoming Prime Minister. This situation led these previously opposing parties to form an alliance to secure power.
This coalition consists of 112 members, just over half of the parliamentary seats, enabling them to claim governance. Following their establishment as the government, parties from Sarawak and Sabah joined the coalition, bringing the total to 144 seats for Pakatan Harapan, UMNO, and the representatives from these regions. With this strong majority, the coalition possesses more than two-thirds of the votes in Parliament, which Mahathir describes as a considerable strength.
Within this coalition, the DAP holds the most significant power with 40 seats. Mahathir points out that for PM Anwar to maintain his leadership, he must cater to the demands of the DAP. However, this partnership is fraught with tension, particularly among UMNO's Malay representatives, who are uncomfortable collaborating with the DAP. Mahathir warns that if UMNO and the Sarawak parties withdraw their support, the government could easily collapse. Consequently, he claims there is a pressing need to silence the Malay voices, which he believes is why the 3R initiative and MOU were introduced.
Despite this show of strength, Mahathir expresses that the coalition remains unstable. He urges opposition representatives not to sign the MOU, suggesting that doing so would only further entrench a government that does not truly reflect the will of the people.
Dr. Mahathir’s remarks highlight ongoing concerns about governance and representation in Malaysia, raising critical questions about the integrity of political alliances in the current landscape.
