At nearly 100 years old, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad still hasn’t shut the door on a political comeback. The former two-time prime minister made waves again during a book launch held at the Perdana Leadership Foundation in Putrajaya on May 19, where he appeared for the release of a new publication detailing his leadership journey and vision.
The event included a discussion session on economic development in the modern age. It was here that Mahathir, ever candid, responded to a question on what he would prioritize if he were to return as prime minister. His immediate answer focused not on infrastructure or governance reform, but on repealing punitive measures against discussions surrounding race, religion, and royalty—the so-called 3R topics.
In his view, suppressing public sentiment prevents leaders from understanding the nation’s true pulse. For Mahathir, leadership without listening is ineffective, and censorship only breeds deeper problems. He underscored the need for open dialogue, arguing that the development of a nation depends on the ability of its people to express concerns freely and for those in power to respond accordingly.
He further emphasized the importance of economic freedom and greater synergy between the government and private sector, noting that a healthy economy cannot grow under the weight of excessive control or corruption. Corruption, in particular, was flagged as a critical obstacle that continues to block Malaysia’s full economic potential.
His remarks come at a time when public trust in leadership remains fragile. While his call for openness might appear refreshing, it also brought back memories of his own track record, which has often been linked with controversial remarks on race and identity. Critics find it difficult to reconcile his past positions with his present advocacy for free speech.
Mahathir’s political legacy is complex. Having stepped down abruptly in 2020, his exit triggered significant political instability, leaving Malaysians scrambling through another wave of leadership uncertainty. This episode is still fresh in the minds of many, and for some, it serves as a cautionary tale against another return.
Although Mahathir remains an influential figure with a loyal base, his suggestions of a comeback are met with skepticism by those who believe his time has passed. Yet, his presence at public forums and his refusal to fully step away from politics suggest he’s not ready to be written off just yet.
