Dr. Mahathir Bin Mohamad, the former Prime Minister, responded with a mixture of surprise and reflection to recent comments made by Lim Guan Eng, emphasizing the dynamics of their collaboration during his tenure. Dr. Mahathir clarified several key aspects of his leadership and policy decisions, shedding light on the inner workings of his administration.

Reflecting on his relationship with Lim Guan Eng, who served as Minister of Finance under his administration, Dr. Mahathir acknowledged the importance of discussions on major issues before they were brought to the cabinet. "It is normal," he noted, "for ministers to present their views, which are then subject to cabinet deliberation before any decision reaches Parliament." This process, he emphasized, underscored the democratic essence of governance, where collective decision-making prevailed over individual prerogative.

Addressing the issue of toll abolishment, a prominent policy proposal during his tenure, Dr. Mahathir explained the complexities involved. "While the manifesto promised toll abolition, practical realities such as maintenance costs and infrastructure development necessitated careful consideration," he stated. Such decisions, he pointed out, were ultimately determined by the cabinet as a whole, not solely by his office or any single minister.

Responding to allegations regarding his interactions with Zahid Hamidi of UMNO, Dr. Mahathir clarified, "I never proposed to ban UMNO. Instead, I sought to address the party's internal issues and its loss of public support due to corruption allegations." His discussions with Zahid Hamidi, he emphasized, aimed at highlighting the need for reform within UMNO rather than punitive measures.

Regarding his leadership style and decision-making process within the cabinet, Dr. Mahathir dismissed claims of acrimony, stating, "Debates were healthy and necessary. As chair, I encouraged open dialogue where every minister, including Lim Guan Eng, had the opportunity to express their views freely." He further affirmed, "I never threatened to dismiss Guan Eng. Respect for coalition partners was paramount."

Reflecting on his extensive political career spanning 22 years, Dr. Mahathir expressed openness to feedback on his leadership. "I have worked closely with many individuals," he remarked, "and I value their perspectives on my conduct as a leader." This willingness to engage critically with his legacy underscored his commitment to continuous improvement and accountability in public service.
