Former Malaysian Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has alleged that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim prevented several foreign leaders from meeting him during their visits to Malaysia. According to Mahathir, these leaders, whom he described as personal friends, had specifically come to see him but were denied access due to Anwar’s intervention.

Speaking in an interview on the Apa Cerita? podcast, Mahathir shared his frustration over the alleged restrictions. “There are foreign leaders from two or three countries who wanted to meet me, but they were told they couldn’t,” he claimed. “These leaders are my friends, they know me well. They came to Malaysia with the intention of seeing me, but Anwar prevented them. He cut off all ties.”

Mahathir, who also served as the Member of Parliament for Langkawi, further alleged that not only were foreign leaders blocked from meeting him, but Anwar’s supporters were also forbidden from seeing him. He claimed that those within Anwar’s circle who attempted to meet him would face repercussions.

“Not only are foreign leaders prevented from meeting me, but even local individuals who want to see me are also not allowed,” Mahathir asserted. “If any of Anwar’s supporters meet with me, they risk facing action.”

The 99-year-old statesman expressed his belief that if his relationship with Anwar were better, they could collaborate to address many of Malaysia’s pressing issues. However, he insisted that Anwar, who is also the chairman of Pakatan Harapan (PH) and president of the People’s Justice Party (PKR), is not open to receiving advice.

Anwar is not someone who wants to listen to advice,” Mahathir said. “I can offer guidance and share my opinions. I believe that through discussions, we could find solutions to economic, political, social, and even personal problems. But he refuses to meet me at all.”

Despite their long and turbulent political history, Mahathir suggested that reconciliation with Anwar could be possible—but under one condition. He demanded that Anwar retract past allegations that Mahathir had stolen government funds.

“If he admits that his accusation that I stole money is false, then I am willing to reconcile,” Mahathir stated.

Mahathir’s comments refer to a long-standing dispute between the two leaders. In May last year, he had challenged Anwar to publicly disclose the alleged stolen government funds linked to him. At the time, Mahathir even stated that if such money were found in his possession, he would donate it entirely to the poor.

Anwar had previously accused Mahathir of misappropriating billions of government funds during his tenure as prime minister. However, Mahathir has consistently denied these claims, arguing that they are politically motivated attacks meant to tarnish his legacy.

Mahathir’s latest remarks highlight the ongoing tension between Malaysia’s two most prominent political figures. While Anwar has remained largely silent on Mahathir’s claims, this new accusation is likely to stir further debate within the country’s political landscape.
