Datuk Mohd Puad Zarkashi, a prominent member of the Umno supreme council, has launched a direct critique of former Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, accusing him of struggling with defeat and highlighting the political success of Umno President Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

In a bold statement made via Facebook, Puad challenged Dr. Mahathir’s recent assertions that he resigned from Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) by choice rather than being ousted by Zahid or Umno. Puad suggested that Dr. Mahathir has faced multiple setbacks, including the political sidelining of his son Mukhriz, which contrasts sharply with Zahid’s perceived triumphs.

“Tun M claims he left Bersatu voluntarily, asserting it was due to his advice being disregarded,” Puad wrote. “While this may be true, it also underscores how his influence has waned significantly.”

Puad went on to highlight Dr. Mahathir’s failed attempts to regain political power following his resignation in February 2020. Despite his efforts to reestablish himself through a new political entity, Pejuang, Puad noted that these attempts also fell short, culminating in further political defeats.

“Dr. Mahathir’s recent ventures have not fared well,” Puad stated. “He resigned once, tried to come back, and faced another defeat. His son Mukhriz has been pushed out of mainstream politics, and despite some efforts, Umno remains a robust entity.”

Puad also pointed out that Umno’s continued relevance and Zahid’s role in shaping the political landscape stand in stark contrast to Dr. Mahathir’s dwindling influence. According to Puad, Zahid was instrumental in both the downfall of the Pakatan Harapan government under Dr. Mahathir and the subsequent dissolution of Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s administration.

“Zahid has been pivotal in ensuring Umno’s survival and influence within the current coalition government,” Puad commented. “Dr. Mahathir’s defeat is clear, but Umno continues to play a significant role. Perhaps it’s time for him to step back and acknowledge that his political era is over.”

In a related defense of Zahid, Umno supreme council member Datuk Mohd Razlan Rafii also praised Zahid’s efforts in revitalizing Umno. Razlan highlighted Zahid’s crucial role in rebuilding the party’s political standing following its poor performance in the 14th General Election. Zahid’s strategic alliances and contributions to the coalition government were noted as key factors in Umno’s resurgence.

Razlan emphasized Zahid’s commitment to maintaining Umno’s relevance and his dedication to advocating for the rights of Malays and Muslims. “Zahid’s sacrifices and his role in forming political alliances have been vital for Umno’s continued presence and influence,” Razlan said.
