In a sharply worded social media post, former Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad has called out what he describes as a series of bizarre and troubling legal inconsistencies in Malaysia, painting a picture of a nation where justice appears to be applied unevenly and arbitrarily.

Mahathir listed a number of incidents and observations, questioning the integrity of the country’s legal and judicial systems. He began with a cautionary note, stating that his remarks were not intended as contempt of court, but proceeded to highlight what he sees as a growing list of irregularities.

He pointed out that some individuals owe hundreds of millions in taxes yet face no consequences. Stolen money is returned partially and it’s considered acceptable. Some are detained without charge, only to be released without explanation.

Among the most serious issues, Mahathir noted that some charges mysteriously withdrawn for individuals already undergoing trial, and known offenders holding senior positions in government. He also raised concerns about the handling of drug-related cases, where massive drug and cash seizures have reportedly not led to any arrests, while in other instances, minor amounts of drugs found in vehicles have led to harsh penalties including the death sentence.

Mahathir also drew attention to a case involving an organization involved in sodomy instances, expressing disbelief and sarcasm with a simple “Wow.” He emphasized the plight of individuals detained for months without formal charges or court proceedings, adding that in many instances, punishment seemed to be carried out without due legal process.

The veteran statesman concluded his remarks with a mix of irony and disappointment stating that there are many more strange things in this beloved country. It’s astonishing. It’s something to be proud of, before ending with the patriotic phrase, “Long live Malaysia.”

Mahathir’s post is particularly important in context of selective prosecution and uneven enforcement of the law. His comments underscore ongoing public concerns about transparency, rule of law, and accountability in Malaysia’s governance.

It marks a critical moment in the country’s evolving political landscape, where even former leaders are voicing deep concern over the state of justice and institutional integrity.
