Following the passing of former Prime Minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, also known affectionately as Pak Lah, tributes have poured in from across the political spectrum. Among them was a heartfelt message from Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who praised Abdullah's calm and principled approach to leadership—especially his decision to step down without resistance after a setback in the 2008 general election.

Abdullah passed away at 7:10 PM on April 14 at the National Heart Institute (IJN), and a state funeral was held the next morning at the National Mosque in Kuala Lumpur. The event saw the attendance of several national leaders and political figures, including Mahathir, who arrived with his son, Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir, and was welcomed by Abdullah’s son-in-law, Khairy Jamaluddin.

Speaking to the media after paying his respects, Mahathir described Abdullah as a leader of integrity and humility. He recalled how Abdullah succeeded him as Prime Minister and led Barisan Nasional (BN) to one of its most resounding victories in GE2004, winning nearly 90% of parliamentary seats.

Mahathir acknowledged that while they did not always see eye to eye in Abdullah’s tenure, he respected the way Abdullah navigated the challenges that followed. BN's popularity declined in the 2008 general election (GE12), but rather than clinging to power, Abdullah chose to step aside and pass the baton to his then-deputy, Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

“Abdullah’s decision to let go of the position without any drama or conflict shows how mature our political scene can be. It’s something future leaders should keep up for the sake of the country’s stability,” Mahathir noted.

He stressed that this mature and drama-free transition should serve as an example to future Malaysian leaders. In an era where political power struggles often dominate headlines, Mahathir pointed to Abdullah’s conduct as a model of political grace.

As Malaysia mourns the loss of a former leader known for his calm demeanor and principled stand, Mahathir's remarks serve not only as a tribute but also as a timely reminder that true leadership includes knowing when to step aside for the good of the country.
