Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has voiced concern that the concept of forming multiple “big umbrellas” within Malay politics could weaken the community instead of strengthening it, ultimately leading to electoral defeat.
Dr Mahathir observed that although the idea of a collective umbrella for Malays had received encouraging responses, the reality on the ground showed that many leaders were more interested in pursuing their own ambitions of becoming prime minister. That pursuit, he noted, had given rise to the tendency of creating separate umbrellas rather than consolidating under one.
If this continues, he cautioned, the Malay electorate would find itself divided across two, three, or even more competing umbrellas. Such a development, he stressed, mirrors what has already happened with party memberships, where instead of uniting, Malays ended up splitting their loyalties. The former premier urged Malays to pause and reflect on whether unity under a single umbrella should be the path forward, or whether division into multiple groups would serve the community’s long-term interests.
He highlighted that the Malay electorate holds sufficient strength across constituencies to secure victory and even form the government. However, he clarified that the intention had never been to form a purely Malay government. Drawing comparisons with the early Alliance model, Mahathir underlined that Malaysia’s political foundation could be based on cooperation between Malays, Chinese, Indians, and other communities. A mixed government, in his view, would not only be more representative but also more stable in the diverse fabric of the nation.
The veteran statesman suggested that failure to unify would only repeat past mistakes where fragmentation among Malay political forces opened the door for defeat, despite holding a numerical advantage in many areas. He pressed that the desire for leadership positions should not come at the cost of unity, as the ultimate loser in such rivalries would be the very community these leaders claimed to represent.
Dr Mahathir’s remarks serve as a reminder that political success cannot be achieved by numbers alone if unity remains elusive. He emphasised that the challenge lies not in the lack of Malay support, but in the inability of leaders to rally behind one coherent platform that could bridge internal differences while embracing partnerships with other ethnic groups in the national interest.
