POLICE have arrested the main suspect in connection with the robbery and rape of a 20-year-old woman at the Similajau Forest Reserve near here late last month.
Bintulu District Police Chief Superintendent Nixon Joshua Ali said the 50-year-old man was detained by officers from the district’s Criminal Investigation Department (BSJ) at about 2.30 p.m. yesterday while in a public area in Sibu.
“Following five days of intelligence gathering and surveillance, the police successfully arrested the suspect to assist with the investigation,” he said in a statement.
According to Nixon, the suspect allegedly impersonated a police officer during the 9 p.m. incident, deceiving the victim by offering financial assistance before taking her to a secluded area where he robbed and raped her.
He cautioned members of the public, particularly women, not to be easily deceived by individuals claiming to be civil servants unless they can produce proper identification.
“This is to prevent them from falling victim to fraudsters, which could endanger their own safety,” he said.
Nixon also urged the public to remain vigilant and not to trust anyone claiming to be a government officer without valid verification to avoid being scammed or harmed.
“The case is being investigated under Sections 392 and 376, as well as Section 170 of the Penal Code,” he added. - November 5, 2025
