The recent by-election in Sungai Bakap has delivered a resounding defeat to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s government, with the opposition coalition Perikatan Nasional (PN) not only retaining the state seat but significantly increasing its majority. This outcome is a significant setback for Anwar, whose deputy, Rafizi Ramli, led the campaign.
PN secured 14,489 votes against Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) 10,222, resulting in a majority of 4,267 votes—more than double their previous margin. This defeat underscores the growing disenchantment with the ruling coalition and raises questions about the effectiveness of Rafizi’s leadership and campaign strategies.
Rafizi’s campaign faced multiple challenges, including voter dissatisfaction over controversial decisions such as the abolition of diesel subsidies and the involvement of BlackRock in managing Malaysia’s airports. Despite aggressive efforts to win over voters through substantial financial promises—such as RM290,000 for mosques and suraus and RM18 million for local infrastructure—the campaign failed to mitigate negative perceptions.
Rafizi’s comments on the election outcome, attributing PN’s gains to the demographic makeup of the electorate, were an implicit acknowledgment of PH’s failure to secure Malay votes. This stands in stark contrast to his earlier claims of increasing Malay support based on “data,” highlighting a disconnection between his optimistic projections and the on-ground reality.
The ruling coalition’s inability to effectively communicate its policies and manage public sentiment was evident in Rafizi’s public spat over fuel prices. His justification for not honoring the promise to lower fuel prices was challenged, and clips of the confrontation went viral, damaging the coalition’s credibility further.
Anwar’s government must now contend with the implications of this defeat. It is a clear indicator of the electorate’s discontent and a signal that merely dishing out development promises is insufficient. The government’s controversial decisions, coupled with perceived arrogance and failure to connect with the electorate’s immediate concerns, have eroded trust.
For Anwar, this by-election serves as a stark reminder of the fragile political landscape and the need for a more cohesive and transparent approach. It calls for introspection within PH and a reevaluation of strategies to regain voter confidence. The focus must shift from making grand promises to addressing the root causes of voter discontent and delivering tangible results.
Rafizi’s fumble in Sungai Bakap is more than just a campaign misstep; it’s a reflection of deeper issues within the ruling coalition. If Anwar’s government does not take decisive action to rectify these missteps and reconnect with the electorate, it risks further erosion of support in future elections.
