A recent study has indicated that a significant portion of Malaysia’s civil service backs Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to lead the country until the next general election in 2027. Conducted in March by IDE Research, the findings suggest that 65.3% of civil servants want the current Madani government to remain in power through the 16th General Election (GE16).
This statistic was shared by Amidi Abdul Manan, a leader from Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) and the director of its Department of Religious Understanding and Strengthening. He emphasized that the study was independent and not affiliated with any internal party contest, asserting that it reflects the genuine sentiment within the civil service.
Amidi pointed out that 62.5% of respondents expressed satisfaction with the performance of the Madani administration, particularly acknowledging the government’s reform efforts and political stability. He interpreted this response as an indication that the administration has successfully projected a positive image among public sector workers, further suggesting that trust in Anwar’s leadership is expected to grow stronger over time.
One factor believed to have contributed to this positive outlook is the unprecedented 15% salary hike for civil servants announced in April 2024. The raise, the largest in the country’s history, marked the fulfillment of promises that previous administrations had failed to deliver. Amidi noted that while several past prime ministers had made similar pledges, it was Anwar who took action and implemented the increase.
Beyond just the pay adjustment, the ongoing refinement of the Public Service Remuneration System (SSPA) has also been received positively, with expectations that the restructured framework will gain broader acceptance as further improvements are rolled out.
Political stability also emerged as a key area of confidence. According to the same study, 62.3% of the civil servants surveyed believed that the current government has ensured a stable political environment—something seen as critical for the smooth execution of administrative reforms.
Amidi warned against attempts to undermine public trust through negative portrayals, which he viewed as sabotage against national reform efforts. Instead, he called for constructive engagement and continued cooperation from all stakeholders to strengthen the country’s governance moving forward.
The survey findings, while limited to civil servants, offer a glimpse into the level of institutional support for Anwar’s administration as it seeks to complete its term and deliver on reform promises ahead of the next electoral contest.
