Singapore-born amateur comedian, Jocelyn Chia, has been at the center of controversy due to her controversial skit about Malaysians on social media.
While public anger grows online, one makeup artist has taken a unique approach to express his displeasure.
Erwan Shah, a makeup enthusiast and founder of a Malaysian beauty brand, recently transformed himself to resemble Jocelyn Chia as an unconventional form of protest.
Erwan Shah, known for his creative makeup concepts and artistic transformations, shared the step-by-step process of his metamorphosis on TikTok.
The one-minute clip showcases his meticulous efforts to achieve the desired resemblance. Beginning with adhesive to flatten his eyebrows, Erwan then skillfully draws an outline on top, followed by applying foundation and contouring to certain areas of his face to mimic Jocelyn's complexion and features. Going the extra mile, he even pencils certain parts of his face to replicate the curves and dips on Chia's visage, and adds her signature mole below his nose using a marker pen.
While some may question the motivation behind spending so much time to resemble someone they despise, Erwan's act appears to be more rooted in a labor of love rather than an act of hate. Similar to Pygmillion, the ancient Greek sculptor who fell in love with his own creation, there is a concern that Erwan might develop an infatuation with his mirrored image.
However, if Erwan can maintain a healthy perspective and avoid such pitfalls, his artistic expression should be respected.
Nevertheless, the intention behind why a makeup artist would devote significant time and effort to resemble a much-hated comedian, garnering thousands of online viewers, remains puzzling.
The actions of Erwan Shah serve as a thought-provoking anomaly, challenging conventional means of protest and prompting deeper reflection on the power of artistic expression in the face of controversy.
