Malacanang suspends work in govt offices, classes in NCR and 6 provinces due to 'Maymay'

MANILA, Philippines -- Malacanang on Wednesday afternoon suspended work in government offices and classes at all levels in the National Capital Region and the provinces of Abra, Ilocos Sur, La Union, Benguet, Pangasinan and Zambales.

Acting Executive Secretary Ralph Recto issued Memorandum Circular 121 announcing the suspension of work and classes upon the recommendation of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.

Malacanang noted that these areas would be affected by continuous heavy rainfall associated with Tropical Storm "Maymay" and the enhanced southwest monsoon.

Agencies involved in the delivery of basic and health services, preparedness/response to disasters and calamities, and/or the performance of other vital services were directed to continue their operations and render the necessary services, the Palace said.

"Further thereto, the localized cancellation or suspension of classes and/or work in government offices in other areas may be implemented by their respective Local Chief Executives, pursuant to relevant laws, rules and regulations," the memorandum read.

The suspension of work for private companies and offices is left to the discretion of their respective heads, Malacanang added. BERNADETTE TAMAYO
