MALACCA: The 30th World Congress of the Eastern Regional Organisation for Planning and Human Settlements (EAROPH) has provided a strategic global platform for Malacca to showcase its urban strengths.
The congress, officiated by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof at the Courtyard by Marriott Melaka on Friday, attracted a diverse range of delegates, urban planning leaders and policymakers from across the Asia-Pacific region and beyond.
Fadillah, who is also the Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, said that a “wise city” is not defined by technology alone, but by meticulous development planning that preserves long-term environmental and social well-being.
Speaking at a press conference, he said that cities are central to Malaysia’s ambition to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, as urban systems remain among the largest consumers of energy.
“Urban development cannot be viewed solely through the lens of physical growth or economic output.
“It must be understood as a continuous commitment to improving quality of life while safeguarding the resources and systems upon which future generations depend,” Fadillah said.
The Deputy Prime Minister emphasised that reaching net-zero targets requires a concerted effort to integrate renewable energy, enhance efficiency, and adopt sustainable building practices across all sectors.
He added that while the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Act 2024 marked a significant legislative milestone, its ultimate success depends on effective implementation at the local level.
He called for closer coordination across all tiers of government, alongside stronger collaboration with the private sector and local communities.
“The success of our cities depends on how well we govern and manage our assets, and how effectively we translate plans into meaningful outcomes for the people,” he said.
Fadillah stressed that Malaysia remains committed to strengthening regional cooperation, particularly within Asean, as the challenges of climate change and rapid urbanisation demand collective, cross-border solutions.
The congress was also attended by Malacca Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusof, further highlighting the state’s commitment to sustainable heritage city management.
