A Malay doctor has been using his own money to decorate a Christmas tree in the intensive care unit of Miri Hospital, bringing festive cheer to patients and medical staff alike.
Dr. Mohammad Dasril Anas was born to a Malay father and a Chinese mother. He is an anesthetist who has served at Miri Hospital for 11 years, and has taken on this heartwarming tradition for many years.
Although he does not celebrate Christmas himself, being a Malay Muslim, this has not stopped him from embracing the festive spirit. Speaking to Sin Chew Daily, Dr. Mohammad Dasril shared his passion for decorating Christmas trees to brighten the atmosphere for staff and patients.
Each year, he carefully selects a theme for the tree, paying close attention to its color and style to ensure it uplifts everyone who sees it. “Decorating the Christmas tree gives me satisfaction and a sense of achievement,” he said, adding that he often shares photos of his completed work on social media.
On Instagram, Dr. Mohammad Dasril describes himself as a decoration enthusiast, Zumba and Strong Nation instructor, and part-time makeup enthusiast. For Christmas 2025, the 150cm tree, costing RM500 to RM600, was sponsored by a fellow specialist, while Dr. Mohammad Dasril personally purchased the lights, ribbons, ornaments, and other decorations.
“I feel immense happiness when I see patients and colleagues smiling at the tree,” he said. To Dr. Mohammad Dasril, the tree symbolizes more than just a festive decoration—it represents love, sharing, and the power of spreading joy during the holiday season.
Miri Hospital’s festive spirit doesn’t stop at Christmas. The staff also decorates for Chinese New Year, Hari Raya, and Gawai, reflecting the multicultural spirit of Sarawak. This tradition extends across the state, with public hospitals in Bintulu, Sibu, and Kuching similarly transforming their spaces into vibrant displays of festive cheer, particularly during Christmas. These celebrations highlight Sarawak’s strong tradition of embracing and celebrating diversity.
