I love my nation and I daily pray for blessings to be upon this nation. Through the decades, we have experienced inevitable inflation as well as climate change. I will always treasure the experience and joy of studying and playing together with friends from all races in a missionary school. Those were the days when we all celebrated the various festivals together, visiting one another when each festival came. The questions over our clothes and food were never brought up. We simply accepted one another and helped one another.

Today, we see a very different scenario. Petty issues over food and dressing have created obstacles in our harmonious lives. Many have allowed walls to divide us and our lives are very different now. In spite of the many setbacks that many people bemoan, I still say Malaysia is unique and special to me. Why?

Which country can actually boast of a people of various skin colours, cultures, traditions and religious beliefs? Malaysia can. As our people stand together singing Negaraku with the Jalur Gemilang raised, we proudly display a people whose skin colours vary from fair, brown or even gleaming dark. But we are all definitely Malaysians. We also speak a few languages and dialects in our community.

Likewise, which country has been so blessed with rich natural resources, beautiful beaches and breathtaking landscapes? Indeed, the lush tropical rainforests, captivating limestone hills, magnificent caves and white sandy beaches which are all available here remain a strong attraction for tourists far and beyond our small nation.

As a result of our diversity, we also boast of a variety of cuisines, all in one place – Malaysia. We have many popular Malay, Chinese, Indian and even Portuguese foods. Even within each people group, the choices of food are numerous. Today, the food we lay on the table is not defined by race. We simply enjoy everything! So, I must say that we Malaysians are so blessed to have these sumptuous varieties of food to enjoy at home, food courts or restaurants.

So, let us choose not to be disheartened by the many setbacks but count our blessings one by one. Let us give thanks for such a unique and special country.

God bless Malaysia!
