MALAYSIA has reaffirmed its commitment to renewable energy and water management as central pillars of national development at the 3rd Sustainability Environment Asia (SEA) Conference 2025 held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.
Deputy Prime Minister II and Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, highlighted the country’s progress under the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR), noting that Malaysia has already surpassed its 2025 renewable energy target ahead of schedule.
“Progress is not achieved by chance, but by the courage to move forward with purpose,” he said, citing the late Tun Abdul Razak.
The minister outlined ambitious plans to achieve 70% renewable energy in installed capacity by 2050, emphasising solar, hydro, waste-to-energy, and green hydrogen solutions while maintaining natural gas as a transitional fuel.
He also called for increased public-private partnerships and community engagement to ensure sustainability is embedded across all sectors.
Water management was another focal point, with Malaysia targeting excellence in the sector by 2040 through innovation, digitalisation, and skilled workforce development.
The Deputy Prime Minister II noted that 97.1% of rural communities now have access to clean water and sanitation, approaching the goal of full coverage.
On a regional scale, he highlighted Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairmanship in 2025 under the theme “Inclusivity and Sustainability” and noted initiatives such as the Enhanced ASEAN Power Grid (APG) to advance a renewable energy–powered interconnected market.
“The path to sustainability demands courage, consistency, and compassion. Governments can set the direction, but the transformation must be driven by partnerships,” he said.
The SEA 2025 conference brings together industry leaders, policymakers, and experts to foster dialogue on environmental, social, and governance (ESG) issues, carbon reduction, and water sustainability, emphasising that shared action is key to a sustainable and resilient future. - November 13, 2025
