The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has announced its intensified efforts to propel the country into the top 25 of the Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) within the next decade. According to MACC National Governance Planning Division director Datuk Abd Aziz Aban, Malaysia currently holds the 57th position in the CPI and aims to bridge a gap of 19 points to achieve the desired ranking.
Abd Aziz emphasized the necessity of reaching a score of 69 to secure the 25th rank, with Malaysia's current standing at 50 points. This implies an annual increment of two points to meet the target. Highlighting a positive trend, he noted a six-point increase from 2018 to 2019, signaling a potential breakthrough into the top 25 ranking contingent upon unwavering commitment and political will from the MACC.
The forthcoming National Anti-Corruption Strategy (NACS) for 2024–2028 is envisaged as the blueprint for Malaysia's ascent in the rankings. This five-year strategy will delineate the nation's trajectory and dedication to combating corruption while fortifying good governance and integrity. Scheduled for release mid-year, the NACS will encompass initiatives yet to be realized under the current National Anti-Corruption Plan (NACP) spanning 2019–2023.
The NACP's six priority sectors include political governance, public sector administration, public procurement, legislation and judiciary, law enforcement, and corporate governance. As of December 31 last year, 77 percent of the NACP's 85 initiatives had been implemented. However, Abd Aziz acknowledged challenges hindering the completion of some initiatives, citing political and legal constraints exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic and governmental transitions between 2019 and 2023.
Earlier this year, Malaysia reversed its three-year decline, ascending to the 57th position out of 108 nations in the CPI, as reported by Transparency International. The country's score improved from 47 to 50 out of 100 points in 2023, halting the downward trajectory since 2019. This positive momentum underscores Malaysia's concerted efforts to combat corruption and enhance transparency on the global stage. With continued dedication and strategic planning, Malaysia aims to solidify its position among the top 25 nations in the CPI, signaling a steadfast commitment to integrity and good governance.
