Malaysia Airlines (MAB) has announced that passengers flying on affected routes during its transition to a new catering service provider are allowed to bring their own meals on board. However, the airline has imposed restrictions on the types of meals that can be brought, prohibiting self-heating and non-halal options.
In an update posted on their website, Malaysia Airlines outlined the guidelines for passengers during this transition period. The airline explained that due to the temporary unavailability of special meals, passengers are permitted to bring their own food, but with certain conditions in place.
Passengers are reminded that any alternative food and beverage (F&B) items brought on board must adhere to liquids, aerosols, and gels (LAGs) restrictions, which means that they should not exceed 100 millilitres (ml) for international passengers departing from or transiting through international airports in Malaysia.
The airline clarified that this allowance is specific to routes affected by the change in catering service provider and is a temporary measure to ensure passenger satisfaction during the transition. Malaysia Airlines has recently concluded its longstanding partnership with Brahim's Food Services (BFS) based in Kuala Lumpur and is in the process of transitioning to a new catering service on selected domestic and international routes within its network.
To mitigate any disruption to passengers' comfort and overall experience, MAB is actively exploring a new service provider that aligns with its commitment to delivering premium customer experiences. During this transition period, passengers will still receive meals or refreshments on their flights.
Passengers affected by the change in meal offerings will be categorized based on the type of route and flight duration. Shorter routes will be served with pre-packed meals, while longer flights will offer revised meal options.
MAB has urged affected passengers to update their contact details via 'My Booking' on its website to ensure they receive timely updates through email and short message service (SMS).
This change in meal services comes after Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG), the parent company of Malaysia Airlines, activated its Business Continuity Plan (BCP) for inflight meal services on selected routes under MAB starting September 1, 2023. This decision followed the conclusion of the contract extension with BFS on August 31, 2023.
The aviation group emphasized that this activation marks the discontinuation of the legacy partnership with BFS on selected domestic and international routes within the MAB network. During the transition, MAB is committed to providing alternative inflight F&B options on the affected routes to ensure smooth operations while minimizing any potential impact on customer comfort and experience.
In the meantime, other remaining routes will continue to be served by MAB's current provider, POS Aviation.
