After a long-standing collaboration of 26 years, Malaysia Airlines Bhd and its in-flight caterer Brahim's Food Services Sdn Bhd (BFS) are set to part ways, marking a significant change for both entities.

The conclusion of the 26-year partnership between Malaysia Airlines and Brahim's Food Services Sdn Bhd (BFS) signifies a noteworthy development in the aviation industry. Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG), the parent company of Malaysia Airlines, has announced that it will assume the responsibility of in-flight meal services on specific routes starting from September 1, as the contract extension with BFS concludes on August 31.

To ensure a smooth transition, Malaysia Airlines has formulated a comprehensive plan to offer alternate in-flight food and beverage options on the affected routes. This strategic move is aimed at maintaining seamless operations while prioritizing customer comfort and experience. The continuity of services on other routes will be upheld by Pos Aviation Sdn Bhd, the airline's current in-flight provider.

The termination of the partnership with BFS prompts Malaysia Airlines to activate its well-structured Business Continuity Plan (BCP) for in-flight meal provisions on selected domestic and international routes. This plan encompasses sourcing pre-packaged meals and F&B supplies from diverse providers, including the participation of lounge operator MAS Awana.

The meticulous execution of these self-catering operations will be overseen by the group's ground handling company, AeroDarat Services, managing the in-flight meal loading process onto the aircraft.

In accordance with safety protocols established by the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) and the Ministry of Health, a temporary distribution center has been established at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) to facilitate this process. This center will serve as a hub for the efficient distribution of pre-packed meal items and supplies to the aircraft.

Recent reports indicate that Malaysia Airlines had taken proactive measures by implementing its BCP even prior to the official transition. By creating a temporary distribution center within the KLIA premises, the airline demonstrated its commitment to upholding quality service amidst changes.

This shift comes after a series of developments, including reports earlier this year that Malaysia Airlines and BFS were encountering challenges in renewing their partnership due to a disagreement over contract terms. The central point of contention was the inclusion of a "termination for convenience" clause by the national carrier.

In an effort to mediate the situation, the Ministry of Finance intervened, urging both parties to extend the contract for an additional two months beyond June 30 to facilitate further negotiations. Ultimately, BFS agreed to this extension on June 28, allowing for a smooth transition period.

As Malaysia Airlines ventures into this new phase, its carefully orchestrated plans reflect its commitment to maintaining the quality and standard of in-flight services it offers to passengers. The conclusion of the longstanding partnership with BFS signals a strategic move that aligns with the airline's dedication to ensuring a positive customer experience while navigating changes in the industry landscape.
