Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan details enhanced cooperation following PM Modi’s visit, covering trade, defence, tourism and a shared stance on Myanmar.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia and India are deepening their strategic partnership across multiple fronts, from trade and defence to regional stability.

Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said the recent visit by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi reinforced ties elevated to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership last year.

He highlighted the robust trade relationship, noting India is a major importer of Malaysian palm oil, electrical goods and semiconductors.

“Trading with India benefits Malaysia, as India imports a large volume of goods from us,” Mohamad told the Dewan Rakyat.

Malaysia also imports semiconductors and industrial goods from India, forming a strong economic foundation.

On defence, Mohamad noted both nations operate Sukhoi fighter aircraft, opening doors for cooperation in maintenance, repair and overhaul.

Tourism is another growth area, with initiatives to streamline facilities for travellers between the two countries.

India contributed 1.56 million visitors to Malaysia last year.

Addressing regional issues, Mohamad said both countries share a commitment to restoring peace and democracy in Myanmar.

He pointed out India shares a 1,640 km border with Myanmar, while Malaysia hosts over 200,000 Rohingya refugees.

The minister was responding to a query from Lim Guan Eng on outcomes from Modi’s visit.
