On 30 January 2023, Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim met counterpart, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong in his first official visit to Singapore in reaffirming the long-standing and immutable friendship between the two countries. They reiterated this is the "most important relationship for both countries".
According to Bernama, Prime Minister Anwar and Prime Minister Lee recognised the long-established and mutual friendship between the two countries. They really welcomed the reopening of borders, and witnessed the signing of an agreement on the digital economy and the green economy and a memorandum of understanding on collaboration in personal data protection, cybersecurity and digital economy. Singapore is Malaysia's closest neighbour with strong socio-economic and cultural ties.
Thousands of Malaysian workers cross the causeway everyday to work in Singapore. They have to get up at 4 am to earn a living and return home in difficulty. The Johor-Singapore Causeway is a combined railway and motorway bridge that links from the city of Johor Bahru in Malaysia to the district of Woodlands in Singapore.
An amicable relationship between the two neighbors is something that is of a paramount importance to the well-being of the citizens between both countries. There are so many benefits that could result from good relationship of this government-to-government cascading down business-to-business (B2B) and people-to-people (P2P).
P2P contact means interaction between the normal citizens of the two countries at various levels in business and culture through traders' chambers, SME associations, educational institutions, etc. In the context of Malaysian-Singaporean relations, the P2P contacts have long been established and likely warm but to attain a greater heights could have been more desirable. So, Datuk Seri Anwar is the right and timely Prime Minister to ensure that Malaysia MADANI is not left behind in developing and sustaining relationships for P2P and B2B resulting with Business-to-Customer (B2C) not just with Singapore but also other countries in the region and beyond.
