Malaysia has pledged complete security for all world leaders attending the ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur this weekend, with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim emphasizing that the nation’s image and stability remain the top priorities. Among the attendees is US President Donald Trump, whose visit has sparked plans for public demonstrations.

Anwar stated that the country’s security forces have been directed to implement comprehensive measures to ensure the summit proceeds without any disruptions or threats. He explained that while Malaysia upholds the right to free expression, any form of protest must not interfere with the organization, travel routes, or overall security of the high-profile event.

He acknowledged that some groups are preparing to stage peaceful rallies opposing Trump’s presence but reiterated that freedom of speech should never cross the line into actions that could tarnish Malaysia’s reputation or jeopardize public safety. The government, he added, remains committed to safeguarding democratic rights while drawing a firm boundary against extremist or provocative behavior.

Authorities have been put on alert to prevent any attempt to exploit the situation by inciting disorder or spreading extremist narratives. Anwar maintained that Malaysia’s credibility as a reliable host depends on its ability to ensure the safety of all delegates. “No nation’s leader would attend an event in a country where security is uncertain,” he noted, underscoring that the safety guarantee is non-negotiable.

The upcoming summit, scheduled from October 26 to 28, will see Kuala Lumpur host major regional and global figures as ASEAN nations deliberate on key issues such as regional economic security, cross-border crime, and geopolitical cooperation. Anwar also expressed optimism that the meeting could foster progress in ongoing negotiations between China and the United States, highlighting that any improvement in their relations would be advantageous for ASEAN economies, especially Malaysia’s trade-driven market.

Earlier, the Palestine Liberation Solidarity Coalition (GSPP) had announced plans for a peaceful rally at Ampang Park to protest Trump’s visit. The authorities have yet to indicate whether special restrictions will be imposed on the gathering, though tight surveillance and control measures are expected.

As preparations intensify, Malaysia aims to balance its commitment to democratic expression with its responsibility to protect the safety and integrity of one of Southeast Asia’s most important diplomatic gatherings.
