Social media platforms like TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube with over 8 million users in Malaysia must now implement strict age-verification systems. Existing users suspected to be under 16 will be given a grace period of up to six months, including time to download or transfer their data before restrictions are applied.

Fines up to RM10 million

Authorities warned that companies failing to comply could face fines of up to RM10 million, while parents will not be penalized if children bypass the rules.

The government says the move is aimed at protecting minors from harmful content, cyberbullying, and excessive screen use. However, critics have raised concerns over privacy, surveillance risks, and possible loopholes in enforcement.

Public opinion remains divided, some parents support the move for child safety, while others worry it may push teenagers toward unregulated online spaces or encourage workarounds.

However, technology companies have yet to fully explain how they will implement the new requirements.
