Malaysia condemns the attack on UNIFIL peacekeepers in Lebanon, offers condolences to Indonesia, and demands accountability for the violation of international law.
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has condemned an attack on United Nations peacekeepers in southern Lebanon that killed an Indonesian soldier and injured three others.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stressed that any attack on a UNIFIL mission is a serious violation of international humanitarian law and United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701.
“Malaysia calls on all parties to fully comply with their obligations under international law,” the ministry said in a statement.
It urged all parties to ensure the safety of UN peacekeepers and protect civilians and civilian infrastructure without compromise.
The ministry also stressed that those responsible for the attack must be held accountable.
In a related development, personnel from the Malaysian Battalion (MALBATT) currently serving under UNIFIL were reported to be safe.
Indonesia confirmed on Monday that one of its peacekeepers was killed and three others were injured after indirect artillery fire struck a UNIFIL post.
According to Indonesia’s Foreign Ministry, the incident occurred near Adchit al-Qusayr on Sunday night local time.
The attack took place amid ongoing hostilities between the Israel Defense Forces and armed groups in the area.
