Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced today that the Malaysian government will discuss a proposal to increase employers' contribution to the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) from 12% to 20%. The move comes amid growing concerns over the financial security of Malaysian workers, particularly in light of the economic challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The EPF is a mandatory savings and retirement plan for Malaysian employees, with employees and employers required to contribute a percentage of the employee's monthly salary. The current contribution rates are 11% for employees and 12% for employers, with the latter being the subject of the proposed increase.
During a press conference, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim acknowledged the need to address the financial well-being of Malaysian workers. "We understand the concerns of our citizens, and we are committed to ensuring that they have a secure future. This proposal is one of the many steps we are taking to improve the welfare of our workforce," he said.
The proposal has received mixed reactions from various stakeholders. Some labour unions and workers' rights advocates have welcomed the move, arguing that it would significantly boost employees' retirement savings. However, business groups and employers have expressed concerns over the potential financial burden, particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
In response to these concerns, the Prime Minister assured the government would consider the potential impact on businesses before making any decisions. "We will engage in thorough discussions with all relevant stakeholders, including employers and industry representatives, to ensure that any changes we make are fair and balanced," he said.
The government is expected to hold a series of consultations and town hall meetings in the coming weeks to gather feedback from the public and various interest groups. A final decision on the proposal is expected to be announced within the next few months.
This proposal is part of a broader effort by the Pakatan Harapan-led government to address economic inequality and improve the welfare of Malaysian citizens. Since taking office in November 2022, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has introduced several initiatives to boost economic growth, reduce poverty, and enhance social protection for vulnerable groups.
