My kampung durians in hometown Perak up north Peninsula Malaysia selling as low as RM0.50 per fruit and premium Musang King dropping to RM6-RM10 per kg. Huge yields and excess export-rejected stocks have flooded local roadside stalls and hypermarket spaces across the country. Premium types Musang King dropped significantly from past highs of RM40-RM80 down to just single digits per kilogram in many peak spots. Vendors have offered viral deals including entire sacks of fruit or promotional baskets for low flat rates (such as RM1000 a sack) or individual promotional pieces. While cheap kampung and mass-market types dominate the cheap bins, elite types like Musang King, D24, and high-end Tupai King remain sought after. So, we had organizing a community “Kendurian” (durian feast) as the perfect way to bring family, friends, colleagues and alumni together. I remember in conjunction with the super rugby final on 11 July at Stadium Merdeka, Kuala Lumpur, Old Edwardian Association Malaysia (OEAM) President Tan Sri Dato' Seri Utama Ooi Huat Beng & members hosted a gathering centered around eating durians for our families, players, students and parents. Tigers (Edwardians) indulged in a highly sought-after Perak fruits from my kampung, known as the “King of Fruits”. Together we enjoyed a variety of premium cultivars & durian-infused dessert. This long-waited durian feast at our Tigers grand super rugby finale just like the old good days when we were at our alma mater in Taiping.
Last weekend, I received delicious out-of-state kampung durians from a close relative, specially transported from his dusun (orchard) in Lubuk Merbau, Kedah. This is a kind of annual gift from him.
