Malaysia files fresh UN protest over Philippines’ Sabah waters claim

Kuala Lumpur: Malaysia has lodged a fresh formal protest with the United Nations (UN) over the Philippines’ claim to an extended continental shelf that overlaps with Malaysia’s maritime territory off Sabah.

According to The Star, Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said the protest was submitted on July 24, three days before the Philippines made its oral submission to the UN on July 27.

He said Malaysia had also reiterated its earlier protest filed in 2024, rejecting the claim involving part of Malaysia’s continental shelf.

Mohamad said reports suggesting that Malaysia had remained silent on the issue were untrue, as the latest protest was lodged before the Philippines’ latest submission.

The issue was raised after former Chief Minister Datuk Seri Yong Teck Lee questioned the Malaysian Government’s "strange silence" over the Philippines’ claim.

The Philippines first filed a claim for an extended continental shelf involving the western Palawan region of the South China Sea in June 2024.

The latest claim made in July still covers part of Malaysia’s continental shelf northwest of Borneo, including waters off Sabah.
