KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia has welcomed Hamas’ conditional acceptance of the 20-point peace plan proposed by United States President Donald Trump, describing it as a possible opening for lasting peace in Palestine despite ongoing Israeli bombardments.

Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said Hamas’ move could no longer be used as justification for continued Israeli attacks on Gaza, where tens of thousands have been killed since October 2023.

“Alhamdulillah, we are grateful that Hamas has accepted (the plan) even if conditionally. This means it cannot be used as an excuse that Hamas has rejected these 20 points, to continue attacking Gaza and killing Palestinians,” Mohamad told reporters after visiting the Sumud Nusantara Command Centre in Sepang today, quoted by Bernama.

He added that the acceptance reflected Hamas’ willingness to pursue a peaceful solution, and said humanitarian aid routes through the Rafah Crossing and the King Hussein Bridge should open once the plan is implemented.

“Those who want to help after this should go through the Rafah Crossing and the King Hussein Bridge because once they are opened, the delivery of aid can take place swiftly,” he said, urging donors to coordinate directly with Wisma Putra to streamline aid deliveries.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had earlier said Malaysia did not agree with many elements of the American-led initiative, but stressed that the immediate priority was stopping the bloodshed in Gaza.

“The peace plan presented by the United States is not perfect, and we do not agree with much of it. But our priority now is saving Palestinian lives,” Anwar said in his Instagram post.

He added that Arab and Muslim countries’ willingness to engage with the plan should not be read as full endorsement, but as a united step to end the violence, halt displacement, and allow Gazans to return to their land.

“Malaysia will stand firmly with Gaza, continuing to monitor, to speak out, and to expose Zionist hypocrisy so that the remaining lives and dignity can be defended,” he added.

Despite Hamas’ conditional acceptance, Israel continued pounding Gaza City overnight with dozens of air and artillery strikes, according to Gaza’s civil defence agency.

Spokesman Mahmud Bassal said at least 20 homes were destroyed, describing the situation as “very serious” with rescue teams unable to reach all casualties due to tanks and ongoing shelling.

Hospitals reported mounting civilian deaths, including two children killed in Khan Yunis when a drone strike hit a tent sheltering displaced families.

The Israeli military said it was still “checking” reports of the bombardments.

Unveiled days earlier, Trump’s proposal—endorsed by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu—calls for a ceasefire, the release of Israeli hostages within 72 hours, Hamas’ disarmament, and Israel’s phased withdrawal from Gaza.

It also envisions Gaza being run by a technocratic authority under international supervision led by the US president.

Hamas said it was ready to release hostages under the deal, but insisted on further negotiations over key details and its role in determining Gaza’s future.

Israel has maintained a blockade on Gaza for nearly 18 years, tightening restrictions in March to block food and medicine deliveries.

Since October 2023, almost 66,300 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli strikes, most of them women and children, according to Gaza health authorities. — October 4, 2025
